Final Blog Post

Final Blog

Hi, this is our last blog. We hope you enjoy!

Action Plan
Link to our action plan.

After we researched and found all the information that we needed, we thought about what
we can take action too. Some of the actions we decided to take and will keep doing it is:
  • Take the pledge and support organisations such as XtheHaze.org, WWF etc.

  • Educate our parents and other children

  • Download palm oil apps and share them with adults who go shopping so they know which products contain unsustainable palm oil and sustainable palm oil.

Even though Exhibition is over we will still continue to take these actions. We would also appreciate it if you can take these actions too. Let’s make the world the best planet EVER!

Exhibition Group Reflection
Our Exhibition went really well and we were really successful. We felt really good doing it because we did so much work towards it. The Exhibition night, when our parents came, went really fast, like it hardly happened. The next day when we presented the whole day was really tiring! At first, it was fine, but after we had to keep repeating our presentation over and over again, it got really boring! But it was worth it because we shared our thinking with lots of people from our school about palm oil. SAIS and another school also came to hear our presentations. We think that Exhibition was an amazing experience, to work together and take action for a sustainable future.

Thinking about Palm Oil
Our groups big thinking about palm oil is that palm oil is a big problem because it causes deforestation etc., but it is a very efficient crop which helps us in everyday life. We think that we should not stop using palm oil, but to use it in moderation.

Advice for Exhibition
Some tips for exhibition is ……
1.When you are making (Vlogs) you should always make the topic that you want to show people about strong and have good information to support your thinking.
2.When you are making a vlog you should always make the vlog interesting with images and props because that will engage the reader to learn more. Vlogs are on your Blog but a Vlog is a video on your site.
3.When you are making a poster you should think about (CARP) C stands for contrast,A starts for alignment,R stands for repetition,P stands for proximity. There should normally only be 3 to 4 colours so it is easy for the reader to read. When you are putting your information on your board then you should make is really big to read from far away.
When you are adding things to your board you should try to have some props or brochures for the guests so they can learn more.

In conclusion, this is some of the important things we would take away. Thank You, everyone, who has been reading our blog posts, we really appreciate it. This is our last blog post, but we may still post occasionally and talk about how we are doing with our action plan. Thank you.

Almost Exhibition Day!

I can’t believe it is Exhibition Tomorrow! I am really confident on what we have done. I am also a little bit nervous, like I have said in my last blog post.

Today, we got our big poster after it got printed, and I think it is really good. We set up our stall and some of the G4’s came to see us practising, and gave us feedback.

The feedback really helped us because nobody had ever seen the full presentation. Something they thought we did well was that we had an easy to read poster. Another thing they said which was good is that we talked clearly so they could understand.

Something they wish we had done better was for us to speak louder (specifically me) This was really important because if I had not known this, I would have done the same mistake again.

Talking too fast is not such a big of a problem, but we have been trying to make sure we don't speak too fast anyways.

A personal goal I think for our group is to know when we have to speak because sometimes we had to remind each other. I think this is important because we need to look professional, so people may take us more seriously. Also it will be awkward for the person, which affects how they feel.

In conclusion, I think our group is going to be great, and all the hard work we have done has paid off.

Tips on how to research efficiently

I am talking about tips on how to research efficiently

4 school days!..... and planning our presentations!

There are only 4 school days until Exhibition! I am so nervous and excited at the same time! This week, our group has been finishing synthesising and thinking about our presentation.

We decided to make a board electronically. Our group has started planning this on paper to see what is important, we are also starting to look at the colours we will use including CARP.

What we have been really focusing on is what we are going to say, our speech. It was really hard to think of the main points when we have so much information we found out! We want our presentation something people will remember, something they will take action for. We thought of telling them some of the information from our 3 essential questions (lines of inquiry) and tell them how they can take action after they heard our information. A standard and the minimum presentation would be like one person's says their question and what they found out, and the next person does the same and so on. Nobody will listen or remember our presentation if we did that, so we thought we could bring our essential question up, but not make it up the whole speech. We also had to remember to make it relatable, so they know what they need to do to help make a difference. We also thought of showing the sustainability compass (mindmap of thinking) so we did not have to say everything.

We are also planning to make some QR Codes of apps which you can help you when you are shopping, to buy sustainable palm oil products.

In conclusion, I think our group is doing really well on our planning our presentation stage, and working together to make this happen.

Quotes… Main idea?

Quotes… Main idea?

In class time, we have only about  11 more days until next Wednesday! That's not much!

We have been working on our quote that would go on our board and the main idea to sum up all our information.

This is our quote, “Don't stop using palm oil, use it in moderation”. We thought this would be a good quote because it tells us that we don't have to stop eating or using the materials we use every day, but try not to use them too much.
“Our main idea is, Palm oil is a very efficient but harmful crop. It is included in many of the products that we buy today, but at the same time, it is hurting many living things including humans. So we should think twice about what we buy and to educate each other about sustainable palm oil and what it does to limit deforestation.” This means that it is an efficient crop but don't take advantage of it and use it more than you need.

We chose these because we wanted to teach people that palm oil is bad and good.It is good because it is such an efficient crop and it makes so many products. But is also harms the animals and their habitats. So what we want people to take away in the Exhibition is that they should use the products wisely and to think of the process it took to make it happen.

In conclusion, we have to work on our action so that all the important things we had learned helps us and does not go to waste.

Our group collaboration + Self reflecting

Like all weeks, this week has been really busy! And I thought that this week I will share about our groups collaboration, and a bit about my collaboration to this group and what I can do better.

I think that our group is doing really well, compared to what I thought at the beginning of Exhibition when we got our groups. Our group not only works together to get work done, we have been starting to really get to know each other and how we like to work. Our group can share ideas clearly and confidently without having to feel weird of a suggestion we have made. We don’t have much fights or disagreements in our group, so that really helps our groups collaboration (I am not saying that we always agree, it’s just that we come with a compromise with everyone's ideas) In summary, I think our group is doing really well on our Collaboration.

Now I am going to talk about me and my contribution to our group and my collaboration. I think I am doing quite well on my collaboration with my group, because not only do I make sure I can have a voice, but ask others about their opinion. Even though I admit I go off task sometimes, like talking about something irrelevant to my group members, they help me be less distracted by putting me back on track. My group members help me with my personal goals for Exhibition, which makes me feel good that we are a team. I think I am really helping my group, and I have been working really hard on this unit. Sometimes it can be challenging because there is so much to do, and in such a short time.

In conclusion, our group is doing well together. We have all done our part by being enthusiastic and making good contributions to our group.

Towards the end of exhibition... !!!!!!!

Toward the end of exhibition... !!!!!!!

In our group we had come up with our essential questions at the start of this process. What are the perspectives of the palm oil issue?
Why is palm oil part of so many products?
How can individuals and organizations in Singapore help reduce the usage of unsustainable palm oil?
I think our group is going well because on Tuesday we were talking about Vlogs. Vlogs are like blogs but it's a video and not an essay of the things u learned. There is this 8 or 9-year-old girl I think and she makes Vlogs about her thinking and learning and makes a less than 1 min video sharing her thinking her channel is called Liv Bits. Even in writing we have been working on our Vlogs as a group. My group's topic is called “Writing a formal email”.
We are also going to do a skype interview with Mr. Harish Harlani. He is one of the office people from P&G. The company P&G also works on palm oil and the sustainability of it

Formal emails are really important because when you are sending it to someone very important they don't want to see an email saying:

Link

This would tell the person or company that they did it in a rush and this person was talking to his/hers friend. Because formal emails have, education purpose, read it again  before  sending, address them, say thank you or warm regards and your name at the end Ect.I thought it would be more fun and interesting for the audience if we make a video with a story so " one person would be typing the email and then a person would go up to them and tell them they should go to the famous formal email expert and then the person talks about the tips to a formal email".

Me so far...

I think that I have been following my goals and achieving some of them, already. I think I have been working really hard on staying on task and finishing my work. Ever sense Exhibition I have started to stay on task all the time. Maybe that's because I really want my group to be successful and for us to have a really good project to present. Usually, I am quite off tasked most of the time but now I have been really focusing on staying on task and getting my work done before the deadline. But it is not easy staying on task when you are on the computer. They are many different fun stuff that you can do on the computer and that's what I find distracting. Some of my friends can't believe I am now never off task. I have faith in my group and I think we are going to do a really good job. Now that I am staying on task I sometimes have to remind my other group members to stay on task.

I am starting to get a bit worried because Exhibition is coming sooner that we think. Right now there are 11 school days till Exhibition. But what I am excited about is the interview we are going to have with Mr. Harish Harlani. He is a very nice man and we have been contacting each other for the last 5 days. And now finally we decided that me and my group is going to skype on the 13th of May. And it is funny because that is my birthday. Anyway, I am very excited to meet him on skype and interview him. Me and my group have been preparing questions to ask him. We have to think deeply about them and make sure it is not a question that we can just find on the internet.

A tip is once you start to get in touch with someone you have to keep checking your email. It is not good just to send one email to someone and think that's all you need to do. You need to check with the person multiple times with what you want to do, which dates that person is available, what is the purpose you are meeting that person.

WWF Perspectives

This is our second week researching. We went to talk to people at WWF, they had lots of interesting information for us, and I am going to share some things which stood out for me.

One thing that really stood out about this perspective is that Marie (the person we interviewed) said that palm oil is not all “bad” it’s just that people have to use it in moderation, and not completely saying that I won’t use palm oil products. A good example of using palm oil in moderation if you are buying chips in the supermarket, buy 1 instead of 3. One of the consequences of not buying palm oil is that people in Indonesia and Malaysia who rely on the palm oil industry to have a living (earn money) can’t have any money to live.

After listening about this opinion, I think I agree because not only do we think of nature, you have to think about the rest of the sustainability compass. They had made some creative ad’s to capture people's attention, so they knew what was going on. I really enjoyed our interview at WWF, and it helped us with our research.

Field trip … Hooray!

Field trip … Hooray!
Today was our first interview with WWF! We got so much information and in my opinion it was scary talking to a person that knows more than us and we had never met before. We actually had a problem but we resolved it. The  problem was that we forgot to send a confirmation email and while one of my teammates was looking through the mail to see the timing they   had  sent us a message 4 days ago about the confirmation,so we had to call the lady and luckily she was free and was okay to do the interview with such short notice!

The experience was interesting but was most shocking was,in one of their posters in the middle of that  poster was a delicious pizza and in the middle of the pizza slice was a chimpanzee that got killed.I felt hurt that we humans are impacting these wonderful animals and they had not impacted us at all but look, what we had done to them.

There was another poster that had a toothbrush and then inside of it was the forest burning and the animals on the other side having to leave their homes because it was used
and burned into ashes and then it impacted others too,the haze impacted us humans and the air.

It was interesting how they had spread awareness to others by going to other schools talking to them about it am how that whole organisation was so organized and how our guide Marie really talked about what they had been doing and she told us such interesting things about palm oil and showed us lots of posters they had made to stop it or spread awareness to other young people that “We can make a difference even when you are young and if you have meaning and a good strong  thinking about it anyone can achieve anything.”

I liked their office was a big logo and lots of people working on different parts of palm oil and the natural things.Marie was a very nice and talked to us about but we learned also as a thing we should do next time is to be more organized because she might of had different plans and then it would have wasted our time driving to get there and then it got cancelled.

WWF Interview Time

Today was the day that my group goes to WWF. Me and my group were very excited. We had everything organized and ready to go. We had our recording paper, Exhibition booklets, and our interview questions. My mom was the one who was taking us there. On the way there, there was a really heavy traffic which delayed us a bit.

Once we got there we noticed that it was a nice and small place. When we started to walk to the entrance we called the lady who we were supposed to meet. It was a very cool office. there was a little shop that sold many different things that will help support WWF. My mom bought us these really cool WWf notebooks. They were 100% paper free and was made of pulverized construction stone. It is water-resistance and tear-resistance. I found it really sustainable and creative. To me, the notebooks show how much effort WWF is putting to create a better environment and future.

When we went into the meeting room we met our guide, Marie Wong. She was a really kind person and see helped us learn a lot! It was really interesting to speak with someone who works with WWF because it was a good experience and it was interesting to see their perspective and why they think that. She helped us basically cover everything we wanted to know.

Some advice I would give you is that before you want to request an interview you have to be well organized and prepared. You can't just call someone and say, "can we have an interview with you?" because you wouldn't be prepared or maybe you might not even know what the purpose of that interview is. Also, while the person you are interviewing is answering your question come up with a deeper question from what the person you are interviewing is saying.

Interview Questions

This week is the first week we have started researching into our topic, and there is so much happening! One thing which I had to do was to think of the interview questions. It was a bit tricky, but once I did a few, it became easier.

Something I really think which will help when you are making your interview questions to think of your 3 essential questions. This helps to write it on top so when you write your questions, you can think of your main focus and not go off topic. We also had to consider some follow up questions, so we can dig a little bit deeper and know more. Another thing which you should do when writing interview questions is to think of a variety of questions so you can get a variety of answers and you can get more information.

I recommend these tips for you when writing your interview questions.

Researching... As a team

                             Researching... As a team

This week we are focusing on our research and gathering our notes and questions for interviews. In class, my group was focusing on our agenda when we meet our mentor and what we are going to talk about .
Our teacher introduced us into this star, the star is when we have complete something we write what we did and put it on our wall which then others can see .
In our group, each week in the pod we have to write on the boards that have skills on we have to write something we did well in two of the skills .
We might be going to WWF organisation (in Tanglin Singapore ) to talk about what they do with palm oil and some questions we have for them .
We are also might be going to talk to our Sodexo team about what products they use and maybe what they can change to make it better and sustainable for the people .
I think today the skill we used were collaboration because we really wanted to get these things done so we had to work as a group to achieve this.
I think next time we could do much more research but otherwise, we did well.
Now we have to get the email from our mentor telling us about when she is available.
We used Lots of Collaboration,Self-managing our time to get our part done,Teamwork to compromise with each another. and being responsible when sending things to other people.
Today we had our first mentor meeting. We learnt a lot from them and what we can do better,They told us we should try to rephrase your questions so that we are not saying the same thing.I enjoyed working with our mentors and when we go back next Thursday with them we will share our new questions and talk to them about our experience when we go to WWF on Tuesday. We will get a better understanding to perspectives after that.

WWF (World Wildlife Fund) email.

Today I was working on my email to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) In that email, I added:

  • Introduction
  • Our focus
  • Essential questions
  • Interview request
  • Time we are available
  • What we might ask them
These were some things that I added to the email. I was really worried I made an error because me and my group wanted it to sound like we were professional. While writing the email I tried to be polite and respectful. Once I approved it with Ms. La Caze I sent the email and started hoping they would reply quickly because I was so excited.  After about two hours I checked my email and realized that they had replied and they said my group can visit them on the day we were available. I felt so happy.

Some advice I would give you is that if you are going to request an interview you should triple check it and check it with a teacher.

Grade 6 Advice for Exibition

Today, the Grade 6’s came to our class to talk about their Exhibition experience. They gave some tips and advice to help us. Something a lot the G6’s said was that you had to be responsible to get your deadlines done, otherwise you can be behind from everyone else. To be able to do this, you have to be organized and a self-manager. I agree with this because if you are not responsible, your end product won’t be as good. Another important key thing is that you have to be a good communicator. If you don’t communicate clearly your ideas to your group, the other people won’t know what your idea or perspective is. In Exhibition, you have to use all the skills and qualities.

Aranya's P.O.E. Blog

Learning about SAIS Exhibition

Today we went to look and listen to the kids in SAIS to see how they had done their exhibition so we can get a better understanding. One thing I really liked is how they had made a brochure for their topic to get their learners thinking and understand further into the topic.I they also used lots of props to make their presentation more  interesting and fun too.I think now for my exhibition topic we might be able to make brochures for our topic and make some props to make the audience more interested.I found that they were very nice and they spoke loud so we can hear what they are saying.

Advice From Former Exhibition Groups

Today some grade 6’s came to us and started to give us a little bit of advice for Exhibition. The most common thing they told us is that you have to be responsible. I totally agree because you have to stay on task and get everything done by the deadline. It was nice to hear from these former Exhibition groups and take some advice. I learned that it was going to be hard and you are going to need to do a lot of skills and qualities. Like being responsible, critical thinker, collaboration and more. Also being organised is a really big one because when you have a mission to accomplish then you really have to get it done before the deadline. But the number one thing is teamwork. You have to work as a team and support each other.
